Bungie has said it will reverse the controversial matchmaking changes it recently introduced to Destiny. Players have reported a significant increase in lag ever since Bungie quietly tweaked its servers in December. The change to skill-based matchmaking in Destiny now favours finding similarly-matched opponents rather than a match where everyone has a good connection. Bungie's intention was to stop less-skilled players getting stomped by competitive fireteams. But this also left those who are highly-skilled at Crucible - frequently also part of the game's vocal hardcore community - matched with skilled opponents who also had terrible connections. The fact this change was not announced at the time has been a real point of contention among the game's hardcore.

Recently, Bungie has introduced a new matchmaking system into the game that helps avoid solo players matching with pre-made fireteams, but only for the game's standard playlists and not one-off events like Iron Banner. At the moment during matchmaking, solo players are getting teamed up against co-ordinated fireteams instead of getting matched up against other solo players or getting matched up with other co-ordinated fireteams. This inevitably causes a lot of frustration for solo players, as it increases their chances of losing Iron Banner matches, which makes it hard to increase their standing with Lord Saladin and earn exclusive Season 3 Iron Banner rewards.
For some players who have been playing Destiny for long enough to have maxed out their characters, the only thing keeping them returning to the game is Crucible matches, but problems with lag can be enough to send even the most die-hard players to another game. Obviously, developer Bungie wants to avoid this at all costs. When the latest expansion to the game, The Taken King , was launched last year, it brought with it a new system to evaluate player skill, Bungie community manager DeeJ wrote in a blog post earlier this week. Since then, the company has been tweaking matchmaking to focus on both skill and connectivity, in order to ensure challenging matches that are relatively lag-free.
